04 Midwifery for all starts with leadership: inclusion, belonging, and retention of CALD midwives
May 5 @ 01:00 - 01:50

Speaker:- Marina Vaccaro
Facilitators:- Kath Brundell & Leta Loh (Shadow)
Abstract:- This presentation introduces the presenter’s PhD research, which explores how leadership styles influence inclusion, sense of belonging, and retention of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) midwives. As a PhD student, the presenter shares the focus and purpose of the proposed study titled: The Impact of Leadership Styles on Inclusion, Sense of Belonging, and Retention of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Midwives: A Phenomenological Descriptive Study.
CALD midwives make valuable contributions to maternity care through their cultural knowledge, language skills, and lived experience. Despite this, many experience challenges in workplace environments that affect their sense of inclusion and belonging. These challenges can influence wellbeing, job satisfaction, and decisions to stay in the profession.
The presentation will outline why leadership plays a key role in shaping everyday workplace experiences for CALD midwives. It will introduce key ideas linked to the research, including inclusive leadership, feeling valued at work, psychological safety, and professional belonging. The presentation focuses on listening to the voices of CALD midwives to better understand how leadership behaviours can either support or hinder inclusion and retention.
By sharing this research, the presentation aims to raise awareness of the importance of inclusive leadership in sustaining a diverse midwifery workforce and supporting positive outcomes for midwives, women, and families.
