Variations on a theme

The deadline to submit Expressions of Interest in presenting at VIDM 2024 has passed, and the Organizing Committee members are busy reviewing the submissions.  As you know, our theme for the conference this year is,  “Sustainability:  Caring for Tomorrow’s World”.  We have defined “sustainability” very broadly although certainly it must relate to midwifery.  We are amazed at the creativity shown in the abstracts as they are linked to our theme.  We would like to share some of these ideas with you.

“…the presentation contributes to sustainable midwifery practices by advocating for a holistic and environmentally conscious approach to maternal healthcare.”

“This aligns with sustainable midwifery’s focus on promoting natural and healthy childbirth practices that support the well-being of mothers and babies.”

“The presentation connects with the theme as it demonstrates more evidence that continuity of midwifery care is the way forward for providing quality maternity care for women in tomorrow’s world.”

“Midwives have always been advocates for change for women’s health and reproductive rights – we now need to extend our consciousness and advocacy to address climate in order to protect the health and wellbeing of women.”

“Sustainable Midwifery therefore must also take into account midwives’ capacity for individual initiative in emergency preparedness and planning along with increased joint collaboration with government bodies.”

“Organizations that work to train and empower midwives with education, support, and skills are investing in the sustainability of the midwifery health force because empowered midwives will have lower rates of burnout and workforce migration.”

“Holding on to the definition, scope and ethical integrity of a midwife is essential to sustain midwifery into the future or we risk stepping into the role of ‘obstetric nurse’.”

“Sustainable midwifery involves not only providing immediate care but also fostering an environment that respects human rights and promotes the well-being of mothers, ensuring a positive and sustainable impact on future generations.”

“Sustainability includes emphasis in three domains: environmental, social, and economic sustainability.”

“This research showed that midwives in the …are ready to embrace optimal birth techniques and reclaim their profession to ensure its sustainability in the country.”

Our abstracts come from Australia to Qatar and many other countries to share their experiences with you.  Please join us on May 5th, The International Day of the Midwife, to hear from them.
