Integrating Continuity of Care for Equitable Maternal Outcomes
This presentation examines how equity, access, and human rights in maternal care are shaped by the ways midwives are educated and supported in practice. Despite global commitments to respectful and rights-based care, women’s lived experiences continue to reveal mistreatment, inequity, and preventable maternal deaths—particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Drawing on over 90 years of evidence, the presentation highlights midwife-led continuity of care as an effective approach to improving maternal and newborn outcomes. It argues that continuity of care begins with education. By transforming curricula, strengthening partnerships between education and clinical practice, and fostering midwives’ confidence for autonomous decision-making, midwifery education can serve as a powerful driver of equitable, accessible, and rights-based care for women and families worldwide. The presentation highlights the need to bridge education and practice in order to equip midwives to provide timely, high-quality, and continuous care across the maternal health continuum.
