11 Why establishing a bereavement care model is important
May 5 @ 08:00 - 08:50

Speaker: Nonkululeko Shibula
Facilitator: Linda Deys
Abstract:
This presentation explores the critical importance of implementing a structured bereavement care model within healthcare units following stillbirth. Stillbirth is not only a clinical outcome but a profound human loss that affects parents, families, and healthcare providers. Yet in many settings, care after loss remains inconsistent, under-resourced, and emotionally unsafe for grieving parents.
The session will highlight how a compassionate, culturally sensitive, and evidence-informed bereavement care model improves parental mental health, strengthens trust in the health system, and supports respectful, dignified care at one of the most vulnerable moments in a family’s life. Drawing on lived experience, advocacy, and best practice, the presentation will outline key components of an effective model – communication, memory-making, staff training, continuity of care, and referral pathways.
The aim is to inspire midwives and healthcare leaders to see bereavement care as essential, not optional, and to advocate for systems that honour both the baby’s life and the parents’ grief.
