Michelle Skaer Therrien, Executive Director of the International Childbirth Initiative (ICI), leads their respectful maternity care across 32 countries through changes in policy and practice. She is also Project Director for the University of California San Francisco Safe Motherhood Program. Member of the Steering Group for WHO Postpartum Hemorrhage Care Bundles (E-MOTIVE), co-author of the 2016 Lancet Maternal Health Series’ “Beyond Too Little Too Late, Too Much Too Soon.” From 2011 she managed the Ministry of Population and Public Health’s Early Infant HIV Diagnosis Program for southern Haiti. Over the past 23 years, she has consulted for UNFPA, Population Council, IFRC, CDC, IPPF, and John Snow International.
Her work focuses on promotion of evidence-based practices, protection of women’s rights, and education of healthcare providers. She serves as Principal Investigator for maternal and child health research in Kenya and Haiti.
