
Dr. Judith Mercer is an internationally recognized scholar and nurse-midwife, particularly for her research on the effects of umbilical cord clamping in premature and term infants. After 30 years as a midwife as a clinician, educator, and administrator, she began a research career to study the effects of delaying cord clamping on newborns inspired by her clinical experiences as a midwife. Dr. Mercer received funding from NIH for her work which she has presented worldwide. In 2014, she received the highest award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives. She is Professor Emerita at the University of Rhode Island and Adjunct Professor of Pediatrics at Alpert School of Medicine, Brown University. Now retired from practice, she continues to write and conduct presentations.
