Dr. Bernice Boafoaa Gyapong is a registered midwife and Senior Lecturer in Midwifery at Buckinghamshire New University. Trained in Ghana at Sekondi Nursing and Midwifery Training College and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), she later earned an MSc in Midwifery from the University of Nottingham. With nearly two decades of experience in midwifery practice and education, she has taught in both Ghana and the UK.
Her doctoral research at King’s College London critically examined the overmedicalisation of childbirth in Ghana’s public health facilities, exploring how health system structures, professional practices, and institutional cultures shape maternity care. This work contributes to global debates on respectful maternity care and the strengthening of midwifery-led models.
Dr. Gyapong’s teaching and research focus on maternal healthcare quality, respectful care, and the advancement of midwifery practice in low- and middle-income countries. She remains committed to evidence-based, woman-centred maternity care and to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes worldwide.
