
Dr. Animesh Biswas is a medical doctor from Rangpur Medical College, Bangladesh, holding a PhD from Orebro University, Sweden, and two Master’s degrees in Public Health from Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. With 19 years of experience in public health, including around 14 years specializing in maternal health.
Animesh is currently working as Programme Specialist- Maternal Health in United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Bangladesh Country Office since January 2025. Prior to this appointment, Animesh served as Technical Officer at UNFPA Bangladesh for approximately seven years. In this capacity, he was the focal point for the National End Fistula Programme, Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR), and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) humanitarian response. A global expert in MPDSR, Animesh contributed as an author to the global MPDSR Implementation Guideline and is an active member of the MPDSR Global Technical Working Group. Additionally, he played a significant role in developing the Global Fistula Manual and Global Road Map to End Obstetric Fistula as one of its authors and is a member of the International Obstetric Fistula Working Group. His technical support extends beyond Bangladesh to include the East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) and Asia-Pacific Regional Office (APRO), UNFPA for MPDSR programme.
Animesh’s expertise also encompasses the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Sexual and Reproductive Health in crises, where he has contributed as a Regional Master Trainer and contributed in the national SRH coordination. Before joining UNFPA, Animesh worked extensively in public health research as a Senior Scientist in a national health research and development organization for over 11 years. He also served as Adjunct Faculty in Public Health at Independent University, Bangladesh, and Postgraduate Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), and worked with UNICEF for a brief period. Dr. Biswas has published over 70 peer reviewed articles in international journals.
